Start thinking micro.
It is great to start with a big picture of what your vision and goals are for yourself. But what about the small steps that it takes to get there? Sometimes it can become overwhelming when we think of ALL of the things we need to do in order to work towards our end result. And if it becomes TOO overwhelming, we trigger our sympathetic nervous system which tells us to shut down and stop.
I know I can often find myself in the trap of wanting to do ALL the things at once. Once I realized that breaking it down into smaller building blocks gave me a greater level of confidence, the bigger picture did not seem as daunting.
Instead focus on that vision as our why and start looking at each micro step one at a time. Each time we set those smaller goals and complete them, we build our confidence for the next one. I often ask my clients how they can break down their goal into the most manageable and relevant step that feels DOABLE. There is still the room to push ourselves just a little out of our comfort zone, but in the beginning start small. If your goal is to consistently workout out 5 days a week, but you have not worked out in over a year, how can you create a step that feels reasonable with your current time commitments and energy levels? Perhaps it is walking for 15 minutes Monday-Friday on your lunch break.
What can you do this week that is a small step towards your vision of health? What resources do you need for support?
